Lim Taek, Candidate for Gwangju Dong-gu District Mayor, Holds ‘Customized Policy Roundtable’ with University Students

Discussed current issues regarding living, housing, safety, and employment with approximately 30 local university students from Chonnam National University, Chosun University, and others - Promised to form a ‘Dong-gu University Student Committee’… “Will build infrastructure for young people to settle and grow”

(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Lim Taek, the Democratic Party of Korea’s candidate for Gwangju Dong-gu District Mayor, met with local university students to listen to the realistic concerns of the younger generation and explore policy alternatives.

On the 9th, Candidate Lim held a policy roundtable with about 30 local university students and listened in-depth to their opinions on various issues facing students, including living, housing, safety, and employment.

Students from major local universities, including Chonnam National University, Chosun University, and Chosun College of Engineering, attended the roundtable. The students freely voiced their opinions on practical difficulties they experience during their university life, as well as policy directions for the future, such as education and career paths.

During the meeting, students expressed their hopes for Dongmyeong-dong, a representative landmark of Dong-gu, stating, “We look forward to it further developing into a vibrant space where youth and culture thrive, much like Hongik University or Konkuk University in Seoul.” At the same time, they strongly requested the resolution of indiscriminate parking issues around the university district and the securing of pedestrian safety.

In particular, they emphasized the need for nighttime transportation support measures to ensure the safe return of students leaving school late at night, as well as the necessity of practical rental support policies for students from outside the area. In addition, they proposed the operation of late-night buses, the expansion of infrastructure such as swimming pools and support for general and specialized sports, and the strengthening of youth policy promotion.

Candidate Lim Taek cited a “lack of jobs” as the primary reason young people are leaving the region and proposed solutions including the creation of an AI-centered future industry ecosystem, increased employment in the culture and tourism sectors, strengthened support for social enterprises and startups, and youth startup projects utilizing vacant houses. Candidate Lim stated, “Creating a city where university students can realize their dreams without leaving the region is the core task of Dong-gu,” and promised, “I will form a ‘Dong-gu University Student Committee’ to ensure students’ opinions are reflected in actual administration, and I will meticulously attend to issues ranging from daily life and safety to housing.”

He continued, “The upcoming era of the unified Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City will be an opportunity for a new leap forward for Dong-gu and its youth,” emphasizing, “I will expand investment in future industries to create a foundation where university students can learn, settle, and grow in Dong-gu.”

Finally, Candidate Lim declared, “Based on Dong-gu’s unique strengths as a city of humanities and culture, I will foster an environment where universities and the local community coexist,” adding, “I will continue to communicate to create a Dong-gu where the younger generation can feel hope.”
