[Break News Gyeonggi South = Yongin Reporter Lee Hyun-jun] Yongin Special City held a traditional coming-of-age ceremony at the City Hall Vision Hall for approximately 20 individuals, including youths born in 2007 who have reached adulthood this year and foreigners.
The city conducts this traditional ceremony every year on the third Monday of May, designated as Coming-of-Age Day, to remind participants of their responsibilities as members of society and to instill a sense of pride in their status as adults.
During the event, participants performed the Samgarye, a ritual in which they learned their roles in the family and society by changing into traditional adult attire and headwear three times, and the Chorye, a ceremony to learn the etiquette of drinking celebratory wine to be recognized as adults. They also read a declaration of adulthood, pledging to solidify their mindset as adults and practice responsible behavior.
This traditional coming-of-age ceremony is expected to serve as a meaningful opportunity for these young adults to realize their rights and responsibilities as adults through these unique rituals and take their first steps as upright members of society. In particular, supporting youth from diverse backgrounds, such as multicultural families and international students, to directly experience Korea's unique culture and etiquette has a tangible effect of strengthening community cohesion and sharing cultural pride.
