Wando County Successfully Concludes ‘2026 Pre-Wando International Seaweed Expo’… Drawn by a Crowd of 180,000

Visitors Far Exceeded Target of 120,000… Proving Status as the ‘No. 1 Hub of the Seaweed Industry’- Presented Business Achievements and Future Value, Including 12 Billion Won in Export Contracts- County Governor Shin Woo-cheol: “We Will Accelerate Efforts to Host the Main Expo in 2028”

(Wando = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Wando County, South Jeolla Province, has once again demonstrated its strength as the ‘Mecca of the Seaweed Industry.’ The ‘2026 Pre-Wando International Seaweed Expo,’ which opened on May 2, concluded its six-day run with great success on the 7th.

Although this expo was planned as a preliminary event to secure the hosting of the upcoming ‘2028 Wando International Seaweed Industry Expo,’ the results exceeded expectations. With 180,000 visitors—far exceeding the initial target of 120,000—the event demonstrated the nation's growing interest in seaweed. Having successfully hosted three expos in 2014, 2017, and this year, Wando has solidified its unrivaled status.

The secret to its popularity lay in immersive content incorporating cutting-edge technology. "Live Ocean" in the newly renovated Seaweed Understanding Hall received favorable reviews from families, offering the experience of children drawing marine creatures to come to life on a screen. Buoyed by this high demand, the county decided to operate the facility on a permanent basis even after the event concludes.

Furthermore, experiential programs such as the "Touch Pool," where visitors could touch wakame and hijiki seaweed, traditional laver harvesting, and sea fishing were so popular that advance registration closed early every day.

This expo holds great significance in that it achieved tangible economic results, going beyond a mere viewing and entertainment event. In the Industry and Promotion Hall, major corporations such as Ottogi and Pulmuone, along with promising local export companies, participated to promote the industrial value of seaweed.

In particular, during the export consultations held in collaboration with the Korea Agro-Fisheries Food Trade Corporation (aT), business agreements worth a total of $21.7 million (approximately 31.8 billion KRW) were signed following consultations with buyers from 11 countries, including France, Japan, and China. Of this amount, a remarkable achievement was made with $8.22 million (approximately 12 billion KRW) leading to actual export contracts on-site.

Academic achievements also stood out. At the ‘International Blue Carbon Forum’ and the ‘International Seaweed Symposium’ held during the expo, world-renowned scholars gathered to discuss measures to address the climate crisis utilizing seaweed. The seaweed blue carbon policy (a carbon sink for marine ecosystems), which Wando has pioneered, was evaluated as having sufficiently demonstrated its potential as a future industry.

It also received high marks in terms of operation. Through the organic cooperation of related organizations and volunteers, a ‘zero-accident expo’ was achieved without a single safety incident.

Wando County Governor Shin Woo-cheol stated, “Through this expo, we were able to inform the world of the blue carbon value of seaweed and the potential of future industries such as marine biotechnology,” adding, “We will thoroughly analyze the results of the pre-expo and concentrate all our capabilities on attracting and preparing for the main expo in 2028.”
