Blueprint for Future Mobility Unveiled… ‘2026 National University Student Self-Made Car Competition’ Opens in Yeonggwang
Sponsored by Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City and Yeonggwang County… Over 2,000 Participants from 60 Teams Across 45 Universities Nationwide - Linking Demonstration and Industrialization Using Infrastructure at Daema Electric Vehicle Industrial Complex… Creating a Virtuous Cycle Ecosystem for Local Talent
(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City is being reborn as an innovation outpost for young talents who will lead the future mobility industry.
The Metropolitan City announced that it held the opening ceremony for the ‘2026 National University Student Self-Made Car Competition’ at the Korea Automotive Research Institute within the Yeonggwang Daema Electric Vehicle Industrial Complex on the 28th, marking the start of a three-day competition that will run until the 30th.
Co-hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Korea Automotive Research Institute, and sponsored by Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City, Yeonggwang County, and leading domestic automakers and institutions such as Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, this competition is the nation's largest mobility technology contest for university students. This year, a total of 60 teams comprising over 2,000 engineering students and related personnel from 45 universities nationwide will participate in a fierce competition using vehicles they designed and built themselves.
In the ‘Formula’ category, the core of this competition, vehicles incorporating novel ideas and cutting-edge engineering techniques will compete in driving performance and technological prowess. Participating vehicles undergo multifaceted technical inspections, ranging from individual component performance evaluations—such as acceleration, braking power, and steering—to durability in harsh driving environments, design integrity, and structural safety. Through this process, students hone their practical skills by applying theoretical engineering knowledge to actual vehicles.
The Yeonggwang Daema Electric Vehicle Industrial Complex, where the competition takes place, is a key hub for future mobility, featuring a high concentration of advanced research and testing platforms, including the Korea Automotive Research Institute, as well as e-mobility-related companies. Beyond a mere competition venue, it boasts an optimal environment where research, demonstration, and industrialization take place in one location, providing participating students with opportunities for practical technology verification and hands-on field experience. The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City expects this competition to go beyond a mere academic or contest event and serve as a pivotal catalyst for the restructuring of the regional industrial ecosystem. The plan is to maximize synergy by organically linking the vehicle manufacturing capabilities and advanced AI industrial infrastructure possessed by the former Gwangju with the e-mobility and next-generation energy industry foundations accumulated by the former Jeonnam.
Furthermore, it is anticipated that as outstanding young talents from across the country directly experience the region's unrivaled research and testing infrastructure, a virtuous cycle of recruitment and startups will be formed, leading to future employment at local universities, research institutes, and mobility companies.
At the opening ceremony, Seo Hyung-bin, Director General of the Strategic Industries Bureau of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, emphasized, “This competition is a very meaningful occasion where engineering students from across the nation challenge their limits with vehicles they have built themselves, proving their capabilities as leaders in next-generation mobility.” He added, “The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City will continue to strengthen the industry-academia-research linkage system and spare no active support for talent development so that outstanding young talents in the future mobility sector can settle in the region and fully unleash their potential.”
