(Break News Gwangju·Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The ‘K-Education Special City Preparatory Committee’ (hereinafter the Preparatory Committee), which will serve as the transition team for Kim Dae-jung, Superintendent-elect of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City, has officially launched and has begun drawing the blueprint for the integrated education office in earnest.
On the 8th, President-elect Kim Dae-jung and the Preparatory Committee held their first introductory meeting at the President-elect’s election campaign office and discussed detailed operational plans for the successful launch of the integrated education office. Subsequently, on the morning of the 9th, the committee plans to pay respects at the Gwangju Student Independence Movement Memorial Hall to solidify its historical significance, followed by a press conference at the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education briefing room to directly announce the committee's specific operational direction and vision to the citizens of the city and province.
Under the slogan "Education for the Republic of Korea We Create," this preparatory committee breaks away from the traditional formal advisory body and has been fully staffed with 12 field and practical experts to swiftly reorganize the pledges presented during the election process into working-level tasks.
The leadership of the preparatory committee is held by Professor Kim Kyung-bum of Seoul National University, a top-tier education expert in the country. Chairman Kim currently serves as a member of the Special Committee on University Admissions under the National Education Commission, which is directly under the President. Moon Seung-tae, former Vice President of Suncheon University, was appointed as Vice Chairman, adding significant weight to the position.
The committee members have also joined in large numbers, comprising field experts from various sectors spanning progressive and conservative viewpoints, as well as professional and general positions. Kim Yong-tae, former head of the Gwangju branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU); Oh Gyeong-mi, former Director of the Education Bureau at the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education; Lim Chang-ok, former head of the Jeonnam branch of the Parents' Association for True Education; Lee Hwan-ho, former principal of Goryeo High School; Kang Young, principal of Gwangju Songjeong Elementary School; Kim Du-seok, administrative officer at the Gwangju Western Office of Education Support; Ahn Byeong-mo, Director of the Policy Research Institute at the Jeonnam Office of Education; Han Chang-su, principal of Yeonggang Elementary School; Kim Kwon-o, administrative officer at Suncheon Seonhye School; and Kim In, administrative officer at Mokpo Girls' High School have been named as members. Kim Seong-su, former head of the news bureau at Jeonnam Ilbo, will serve as the spokesperson and act as a communication channel.
The preparatory committee will operate from July 31, starting with an official launch ceremony on the 10th. Notably, it will be divided into two locations—a Gwangju headquarters and a Jeonnam headquarters—to promote balanced development and harmony between the two regions of Gwangju and Jeonnam. Preparatory Committee Chairman Kim Gyeong-beom expressed his strong ambition, stating, “Achieving stable educational integration in Jeonnam and Gwangju is our top priority,” and adding, “At the same time, we will present a new standard for the future of Korean education.”
