Gwangju City Accelerates Reshaping of Industrial Landscape in Preparation for ‘Gwangju-Jeonnam Integration’

‘Gwangju Industrial Renaissance TF’ Holds 2nd Meeting… Discusses Action Plans for Leaping Toward a Single Economic Zone

(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gwangju Metropolitan City has embarked on an accelerated race toward economic integration by concretizing a future vision for local industries, keeping pace with the trend of the times regarding the integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam.

On the 24th, Gwangju City held the ‘2nd Meeting of the Gwangju Industrial Renaissance Task Force (TF)’ in the City Hall Conference Room. This meeting was a follow-up measure to the launch of the TF last February; it was organized for Gwangju City and key local innovation institutions to put their heads together to discuss practical collaboration plans following the integration and implementation strategies for establishing a single economic zone. At the meeting, presided over by Vice Mayor for Culture and Economy Kim Young-moon, key institutions driving regional industry—including Gwangju Technopark, the AI Industry Convergence Group, the Gwangju Future Car Mobility Promotion Agency, and the Korea Institute of Photonics Technology—attended to share their respective specialized visions.

Each institution presented concrete cooperation plans to maximize synergy with Jeonnam, transcending administrative boundaries.

Gwangju Technopark proposed fostering key regional industries jointly with Jeonnam, as well as joint planning and attraction strategies for large-scale national projects, such as the Quantum Cluster competition.

The AI Industry Convergence Group unveiled a vision to establish "Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City" as the central hub for AI innovation in Korea, based on the National AI Data Center.

The Gwangju Future Car Mobility Promotion Agency set forth the goal of building a competitive future mobility ecosystem by combining Gwangju's strength in finished vehicle manufacturing capabilities with Jeonnam's energy infrastructure, including materials, components, and offshore wind power. Meeting participants agreed that beyond a mere physical merger, a division of roles among agencies is essential for fostering efficient industries. In particular, they emphasized that preventing duplicate investments and organically connecting the strengths of each region are key factors determining regional competitiveness in the era of integration.

Going forward, Gwangju City plans to operate the 'Industrial Renaissance TF' as the control tower for industrial innovation. Through regular discussions, the city intends to refine policies and continuously identify industrial models optimized for the integrated environment.

Kim Young-moon, Vice Mayor for Culture and Economy, stated, "This meeting holds great significance in that relevant agencies have prepared preemptive response strategies ahead of the era of integration." He added, "We will pool the collective capabilities of the agencies to complete the 'New Economic Map of Gwangju and Jeonnam' and secure strong momentum to enable our region to leap forward as a core hub for Korea's future industries."
