Goseong County Expands Cultivation of Regionally Specialized Vegetables to Strengthen Agricultural Competitiveness

Support for 9 Items Including Spinach, Strawberries, and Tomatoes... Establishing a Joint Production System Centered on Crop Groups

Goseong County in South Gyeongsang Province is stepping up efforts to strengthen agricultural competitiveness by fostering regionally specialized vegetable crops.

On the 13th, Goseong County announced that it is expanding the "Regional Specialization Technology Development Support Project," which reflects local conditions and the needs of farmers, while strengthening a joint production and distribution system centered on crop groups.

This project targets crop groups cultivating the same crop and operates by providing farming materials such as fertilizers, pesticides, and agricultural machinery to crops that have secured a cultivation area of 20 hectares or more.

Moving away from support focused on individual farms, the county is building a foundation for joint production and distribution to encourage the scaling up and organization of the region's representative crops. The project, which began in 2014 with two items—spinach and tomatoes—has now expanded to nine items, including spinach, tomatoes, pumpkins, chives, strawberries, aster greens, chili peppers, garlic, and onions. The total cultivation area has also increased to 640 hectares.

Goseong County is investing a total of 2.072 billion won to implement the project this year. Of this amount, subsidies account for 1.036 billion won.

The county explained that the purpose of the project is to reduce the management burden on farms struggling with recent increases in agricultural material prices and labor costs, and to establish a stable production base.

In addition, the county plans to provide support to enhance distribution competitiveness and enable joint responses to market changes through a system of joint purchasing and shipping centered on crop groups.

A Goseong County official stated, "The regional specialization project is a model for strengthening regional agricultural competitiveness that combines the autonomous participation of farmers with administrative support," adding, "We will continue to strive to discover vegetables and specialized crops suited to the region's characteristics and expand support for them."
