Goseong County Goes All Out to Secure Agricultural Water in Preparation for Prolonged Drought

Cumulative Rainfall at 78% of Last Year's Level... Preemptive Response Including Reserve Fund Injection and Well Development

Goseong County in South Gyeongsang Province is implementing comprehensive measures to secure agricultural water in response to the continuing "dry rainy season" and insufficient rainfall.

On the 29th, Goseong County announced that as of July 28 this year, cumulative rainfall stood at 684 mm, remaining at only 78% of the level recorded during the same period last year (876 mm). With no clear precipitation forecast for the time being, concerns are rising regarding a shortage of agricultural water. The possibility of drought damage is increasing, particularly for rain-fed rice paddies and field crops in high-altitude areas.

County Governor Ha Hak-yeol recently visited the fields of Jukgye-ri, which is under the management of the Korea Rural Community Corporation, to inspect the water supply situation and discuss measures to secure agricultural water with relevant agencies.

If the drought becomes prolonged, the county plans to implement short-term measures by injecting reserve funds, such as creating ponds in rivers, supplying water pumps, and providing emergency support for sprinkler trucks. In areas facing water shortages, mid-to-long-term measures will be implemented in parallel, such as developing additional large-scale wells, maintaining pumping stations, and establishing temporary pumping points on a permanent basis.

Furthermore, the county plans to expand reservoir capacity and establish a foundation for a stable water supply by utilizing periods of low water levels to carry out reservoir dredging projects.

Previously, the county invested 1.2 billion won—combining national, provincial, and county funds—to complete 17 agricultural water development projects, including well development, reservoir construction, and intake weir maintenance, to secure agricultural water for the farming season.

County Governor Ha Hak-yeol stated, "We will strengthen field-oriented responses and concentrate administrative efforts on minimizing drought damage so that farmers can focus on farming without worrying about water shortages."
