경북 청송군 주왕산국립공원에서 실종됐던 초등학생이 수색 사흘 만에 숨진 채 발견됐다.
12일 경북경찰청과 경북소방본부 등에 따르면 초등학생 A군(11·초6)은 이날 오전 10시13분경 주왕산국립공원 주봉 인근 용연 폭포 방향 등산로 바깥 낭떠러지에서 발견됐다.
소방 관계자는 "실종된 A군이 주봉 인근 등산로 낭떠러지 밑에서 숨진 채 발견됐다"며 "A군이 실족한 뒤 숨진 것으로 추정되나 현재 정확한 신원과 사망 경위 등은 보다 조사가 필요하다"고 밝혔다.
한편 A군은 지난 10일 가족과 함께 대구에서 주왕산국립공원 내 대전사를 방문했다가 낮 12시경 "잠시 산에 올라 갔다오겠다"며 혼자 주봉 방향으로 이동한 뒤 연락이 끊긴 것으로 전해졌다. 부모는 A군과 연락이 닿지 않자 당일 오후 5시53분경 소방당국에 실종 신고를 접수했다.
이후 대규모 장비와 인력으로 구성된 수색대는 A군을 찾아 나섰다. 야간에는 열화상 카메라가 장착된 드론과 구조견, 인력을 동원해 야산 곳곳을 살폈지만 별다른 흔적을 발견하지 못했다.
당국은 수색 사흘째인 이날 오전 5시33분부터 주봉 일대를 중심으로 헬기 3대, 구조견 16마리, 드론 6대 등 장비 58대와 인력 347명을 투입해 합동 수색을 벌인 끝에 드론이 등산로 낭떠러지 밑에 A군과 비슷한 옷차림의 시신을 발견, 경찰특공대가 현장에 진입해 확인했다.
