The door is opening again to discover emerging artists who will lead the next wave of art in Gyeongnam. This approach goes beyond simply exhibiting works; it connects them to criticism and creative work, aiming to support local artists in growing within the professional art world.
The Gyeongnam Museum of Art announced that it is accepting open applications for artists to participate in the emerging artist support exhibition, "2027 NArtist."
Applicants must be at least 25 years old and either born in Gyeongnam, have resided in the region for at least three years, or be graduates of a university in the area. Applications will be accepted via email from the 14th to the 27th of this month.
NArtist is a program designed to discover emerging artists based in the region who demonstrate a unique perspective and an experimental artistic world.
Launched in 2016 and operating on a biennial basis, the program has discovered a total of 24 artists through five exhibitions leading up to 2025. Rather than remaining a one-off curated exhibition, the focus is on providing a foundation for growth so that local emerging artists can establish their own artistic world within the art community. This open call also placed greater emphasis on nurturing artists than on selecting exhibition participants.
The finally selected artists will showcase their works in the exhibition hall on the 3rd floor of the Gyeongnam Museum of Art for approximately three months, from March 12 to June 20 of next year. In addition, they will receive support including matching with art critics, manuscript submissions for critiques, and production costs for creating their works.
In particular, this structure supports actual creative activities by providing emerging artists with both the opportunity for critical evaluation—where their work can be objectively assessed—and the funding required to produce new works.
The selection process involves internal museum reviews and interviews with external art experts. Key evaluation factors are expected to include not only the quality of the artwork but also the artist's established direction and potential for future growth.
Kim Jae-hwan, Head of the Curatorial Team at the Gyeongnam Museum of Art, expressed his anticipation for active participation from young local artists, stating, "Through this open call, we will discover talented emerging artists and support them so that they can grow into artists representing Gyeongnam."
In the local art scene, the opportunity for a first exhibition is not the only thing emerging artists need. It is important to build a career that allows artists to continue their work and be recognized by the art world even after the exhibition. Attention is focused on which new artists and works NArtist, which has discovered 24 artists over the past 10 years, will bring to the forefront of the Gyeongnam art scene this time.
Detailed information on the call for entries and submission documents can be found on the Gyeongnam Museum of Art website.
