SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, is reportedly exploring plans to build a massive semiconductor manufacturing complex in Texas as the billionaire accelerates efforts to establish an independent AI chip ecosystem spanning electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and space technologies.

According to multiple foreign media reports on Wednesday, SpaceX is reviewing Grimes County, Texas, as a potential site for a next-generation semiconductor manufacturing facility known as “Terafab.” Initial investment estimates are said to reach approximately $55 billion, with some projections suggesting total long-term investment could eventually exceed $100 billion if expansion phases are included.

Local authorities have already begun preparations for the potential project. Grimes County recently issued notices referencing a large-scale vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced equipment investment initiative, fueling speculation that the project could become one of the largest AI-related industrial investments in the United States.

Industry observers view the initiative as an extension of Musk’s previously discussed “Terafab Project,” which he referenced earlier this year while outlining plans for Tesla and SpaceX to develop a shared AI semiconductor production ecosystem.

The chips produced through the project are expected to support Tesla’s autonomous driving systems, xAI’s large-scale AI models, AI data centers, satellite communications infrastructure, and future space-based computing systems.

Musk has repeatedly emphasized the growing importance of securing independent semiconductor production capacity as global demand for AI computing power continues to surge. With companies such as Nvidia struggling to meet exploding demand for advanced AI chips, analysts say vertically integrated production could become a major competitive advantage for large technology firms.

Some industry analysts believe the project represents more than a conventional semiconductor investment. Instead, it may signal Musk’s broader ambition to build an interconnected “Musk AI ecosystem” linking Tesla’s autonomous AI systems, xAI’s generative AI platforms, and SpaceX’s satellite and space data infrastructure through a unified semiconductor backbone.

Musk has previously outlined long-term goals involving 100 to 200 gigawatts of AI computing infrastructure on Earth and potentially terawatt-scale computing systems in space — figures that would far exceed the scale of today’s global data center infrastructure.

However, skepticism remains regarding whether SpaceX can successfully operate a cutting-edge semiconductor fabrication facility despite having no direct experience in advanced chip manufacturing. Modern semiconductor production requires highly specialized expertise in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, yield optimization, and supply chain coordination.

Reports indicate Musk’s companies have been in discussions with several major semiconductor equipment and manufacturing firms. Bloomberg reported that SpaceX has explored potential cooperation with Intel and has also contacted leading chip equipment suppliers including Applied Materials, Lam Research, and Tokyo Electron.

Analysts say that if realized, the project could significantly influence the restructuring of the U.S. semiconductor supply chain as Washington continues pushing to expand domestic advanced chip manufacturing capacity.

At the same time, Musk appeared to temper speculation surrounding the project’s finalization. In a recent social media post, he noted that Grimes County is only one of several locations currently under consideration, suggesting the project has not yet reached a final decision stage.
