Samsung labor-management talks extend by one more day

(Yonhap)

The tug-of-war negotiations between Samsung Electronics Co. management and labor union will continue through Wednesday, after being extended by one more day after the two sides failed to reach agreement on one key issue.

The second round of post-mediation talks between Samsung Electronics and its union began at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) in Sejong and ended around 1 a.m. Wednesday after running past midnight. The commission said around 12:30 a.m. that talks would resume at 10 a.m.

NLRC Chairman Park Soo-keun told reporters after the meeting that labor and management “still differ on one issue,” adding that the company would finalize and present its position.

The unresolved issue is likely to be the distribution of performance bonuses. Management argues that the profitable memory division should receive a larger share, while the union says employees in the loss-making System LSI and foundry divisions should also receive higher payouts.

Asked whether the commission’s mediation proposal had been delivered to both sides, Park said it had, but added that the unresolved issue left it unclear whether the dispute would be settled through mutual agreement or mediation.

On whether the union would have enough time to hold a membership vote if a deal is reached Wednesday, Park said the strike would be postponed if an agreement is finalized. He added that talks would conclude in the morning and that the union vote would take one day.

Negotiators, including the commission chairman, are expected to remain in Sejong overnight. Choi Seung-ho, head of Samsung Electronics’ largest labor union, also told reporters he would stay at the commission ahead of the resumed talks.

Although negotiations have continued until the eve of the planned strike, expectations for a last-minute agreement have risen.

The strike date, however, could be postponed to allow time for a union vote, with any government intervention dependent on whether the strike proceeds.
