OpenAI is discontinuing its video generation platform Sora just months after launch, marking a significant shift in the company’s product strategy.
The decision follows internal discussions led by CEO Sam Altman to wind down video-focused tools and redirect resources toward longer-term initiatives.
Sora, introduced in September as a text-to-video generator, quickly gained traction with strong download numbers and partnerships, including a planned collaboration with The Walt Disney Company. However, concerns over deepfake misuse and regulatory pressure created challenges for the platform.
The shutdown affects both the standalone app and related video capabilities integrated into ChatGPT. OpenAI indicated that more details on timelines and data preservation will follow. The Sora team is expected to transition to projects involving robotics and enterprise-focused AI tools.
