MEPSGEN, an integrated MPS–DDS platform developer, said Monday it is moving into large-scale production of microparticles used in long-acting injectables (LAIs).

Demand for long-acting injectable technologies has been rising, driven by their ability to reduce dosing frequency, improve patient adherence and maintain more stable drug levels.

To address this demand, MEPSGEN plans to advance microparticle manufacturing using its proprietary microfluidics-based drug delivery platform, the NanoCalibur series, aiming to build a scalable system from research and preclinical stages through to GMP manufacturing.

NanoCalibur’s microfluidics-based synthesis chip enables precise control of particle size, structure and reproducibility, the company said. Conventional emulsion methods allow large-scale production but lack uniformity and process control, while traditional microfluidics offers uniformity but faces limits in throughput and scalability.

MEPSGEN said its platform uses parallelized microfluidic chips based on semiconductor processes to scale production from lab to commercial levels without process changes, maintaining throughput and stability.

The platform operates under low-shear conditions, which help preserve drug stability and control initial drug release profiles.

The company, which has developed drug delivery systems using nanoparticles, is now expanding into microparticles and will showcase its technologies at BIO USA 2026 in San Diego.

“Long-acting injectables are an innovative drug delivery technology that enhances patient convenience and outcomes,” CEO Kim Yong-tae said. “We aim to strengthen our competitiveness in the global DDS market by enabling stable, large-scale production of high-quality microparticles.”

Kim added that MEPSGEN plans to expand partnerships with pharmaceutical and biotech companies to support long-acting formulation development and build an end-to-end platform spanning research to commercial manufacturing.

MEPSGEN’s portfolio includes MEPS-X organ-on-a-chip systems, ProMEPS for automated tissue modeling and NanoCalibur for particle production.
