LIG Nex1 has embarked on a digital transformation of the battlefield environment using artificial intelligence (AI). In collaboration with American AI software company Palantir Technologies, LIG Nex1 is pursuing the advancement of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) integrated defense solutions, moving beyond competition centered on weapon performance to strengthen capabilities for rapid information integration and analysis.
LIG Nex1 announced on March 25 that it signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Cooperation in Developing Integrated Air Defense Network and Unmanned Systems Solutions’ with Palantir on March 24 (local time) at Palantir’s office in Palo Alto, California.
The signing ceremony was attended by key officials, including LIG Nex1 CEO Shin Ik-hyun and Palantir Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) and Chief Legal Officer (CLO) Ryan Taylor.
Under this agreement, the two companies will cooperate on developing an integrated air defense network that can respond from low to high altitudes and unmanned platforms tailored to specific mission types. The plan is to enhance research and development (R&D) capabilities by adding Palantir’s data analysis expertise to LIG Nex1’s accumulated technologies in guided weapons and surveillance and reconnaissance.
The two companies have been jointly developing next-generation defense solutions combining hardware and software since 2024. Based on this collaboration, they intend to accelerate the establishment of a system capable of responding quickly and accurately to various threat scenarios. This agreement is also expected to contribute to the expansion of overseas export markets, including the UAE.
Recently, in the defense industry, the importance of data fusion and command and control capabilities has become as crucial as weapon performance in competition among companies. The U.S. defense industry is fully developing AI-based command and control systems in line with the Department of Defense’s JADC2 and CJADC2 initiatives. Anduril introduced its self-developed Lattice as an AI-based battlefield management platform that accelerates complex kill chains. In Europe, alongside NATO’s strengthening of integrated air and missile defense capabilities, multinational air defense cooperation through joint procurement is expanding, centered on the German-led European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI).
CEO Shin stated, “LIG Nex1 has strived to contribute to the modernization and advancement of the defense capabilities of the Republic of Korea and export countries, based on our comprehensive solutions that encompass precision-guided weapons, unmanned systems, and surveillance and reconnaissance. We expect this expanded cooperation will strengthen our defense R&D capabilities and further enhance our global competitiveness.
