South Korea’s equity market extended gains on improving semiconductor outlook, but the country’s two chip leaders showed sharply different stock performance.

According to the Korea Exchange, SK Hynix surged more than 5% on April 27, closing in the 1.29 million won range. The stock briefly crossed 1.3 million won during the session, setting a new all-time high.

In contrast, Samsung Electronics rose only about 2%, underperforming despite the broader rally.

Market participants say the divergence reflects company-specific factors overshadowing a shared tailwind from the global chip cycle. Strong earnings from U.S. semiconductor firms and gains in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index have lifted sentiment across the sector, but investor attention has increasingly turned to internal risks at individual companies.

For Samsung, labor tensions have emerged as a key overhang. A major union has announced plans for a general strike from May 21 to June 7, raising concerns about potential production disruptions. Industry estimates suggest tens of thousands of workers could participate.

Analysts warn that if the strike materializes, the impact may extend beyond a short-term issue. Even a modest disruption in memory output could increase price volatility in the global market, while a prolonged stoppage could weigh on earnings and supply stability.

Supply reliability is a critical factor in the semiconductor industry, and any perceived risk could prompt customers to diversify suppliers, adding to medium- to long-term uncertainty for Samsung.

Meanwhile, SK Hynix has benefited from strong momentum in high-value products such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which is in high demand for AI applications. Expectations for improved earnings have attracted investor inflows.

Market observers say the current phase highlights a shift where stock performance within the same industry is increasingly determined by a mix of earnings momentum and company-specific risks.

An industry official noted that while the semiconductor sector appears to be entering an upcycle, near-term stock direction may hinge on how companies manage internal challenges, particularly labor-related risks in Samsung’s case.
