Hyundai Motor and Kia announced that on May 15 (local time), four universities — IIT (Indian Institutes of Technology) Hyderabad and IIT Kanpur, along with VNIT (Visvesvaraya National Institutes of Technology) Nagpur and Tezpur University — signed agreements to join the joint research framework under the “Hyundai Center of Excellence for future mobility technology” (hereinafter the Hyundai Center of Excellence).
The signing ceremony was attended by Tarun Garg, President and Head of Hyundai Motor’s India Regional Headquarters; Kim Chang-hwan, Executive Vice President in charge of Electrification and Energy Solutions at Hyundai Motor and Kia and co-chair of the Hyundai Center of Excellence; along with university representatives including Garikapati Narahari Sastry, Director of IIT Hyderabad; Tarun Gupta, Director of IIT Kanpur; Yashwant Bhaskar Katpatal, Director of VNIT Nagpur; and Amarendra Kumar Das, Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University.
Hyundai Motor and Kia officially launched the Hyundai Center of Excellence last April — a mid-to-long-term strategic industry-academia cooperation model designed to enhance market responsiveness through co-growth with India’s technology and manufacturing sectors — with top-tier universities including IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, and IIT Bombay.
With the addition of four more premier engineering universities to the industry-academia cooperation ecosystem through today’s agreements, the Hyundai Center of Excellence’s joint research framework has effectively expanded to cover all of India. As a result, top-tier talent from seven universities across India, centered around the Hyundai Center of Excellence, will carry out a total of 39 industry-academia research projects spanning areas including battery and electrification, new materials research, and AI-based V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) platform development.
As part of the industry-academia research initiative, a program is also planned for June in which deans and professors from all seven universities participating in the Hyundai Center of Excellence will be invited to Korea for in-depth discussions on areas of cooperation and to experience Hyundai Motor and Kia’s strategies, technologies, and vision firsthand.
Kim Chang-hwan, Executive Vice President in charge of Electrification and Energy Solutions at Hyundai Motor and Kia, said: “The master agreement we are signing together today is more than just a contract — it is a shared promise toward the future,” adding, “Hyundai Motor Group and India’s academic community will work together to build a sustainable, innovative, and brighter future.”
