HS Hyosung Advanced Materials announced on May 6 that it will support a demonstration project by participating as the lead investor in the $13 million Series B investment round of Trillium. ‘Capricorn Partners’, an investment firm specialized in innovative technologies in Belgium, also participated in this round as a co-investor.
Trillium Renewable Chemicals is an American chemical technology startup in which HS Hyosung Advanced Materials has been investing since 2022. Trillium aims to present a sustainable alternative to related industries by producing acrylonitrile based on waste glycerol, a byproduct generated in the biodiesel production process, thereby directly replacing existing petrochemical-based products.
Previously, Trillium completed the construction of ‘Project Falcon’, the world’s first glycerol-based bio-acrylonitrile demonstration plant, in February. ‘Project Falcon’ will enter full-scale test operations in the second quarter of 2026, and plans to begin shipping products within the second half of this year. The investment funds secured this time will be injected into the operation of the demonstration plant, continuous investment in technological innovation, and the detailed design of the first large-scale commercial plant.
Lee Young-jun, Executive Vice President of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials, stated, “With the completion of ‘Project Falcon’, the commercialization of Trillium’s bio-acrylonitrile has come into sight,” and added, “As an important achievement of the sustainable management that HS Hyosung Advanced Materials has been pursuing, we are now able to prove that bio-raw materials can be immediately injected into existing production processes and mass-produced on a commercial scale through the operation of the demonstration plant.”
