Genesis BBQ Co., one of South Korea’s leading fried chicken franchise brands, is accelerating its global expansion by entering Central Asia for the first time.
Genesis BBQ announced on Monday that it has opened its first store in Kazakhstan in Almaty, the country’s largest city.
The 78-square-meter Mega Almaty branch is located in the food court of a major mixed-use shopping mall in Central Asia. The menu includes the brand’s signature fried chicken, alongside UFO Chicken, which features various fried chicken items served with cheddar cheese fondue for dipping.
Almaty is Kazakhstan’s largest city and its de facto economic center, regarded as one of Central Asia’s highest-spending consumer markets. The company noted that the city’s developed dining industry makes it the first choice for many global brands entering Kazakhstan.
BBQ plans to expand operations nationwide starting from Almaty. It plans to open 20 stores in major commercial districts during the first half of the year and expand into the capital city, Astana, within the third quarter.
BBQ aims to open 100 locations in Kazakhstan by the end of the year.
Currently, the franchise operator operates around 700 stores across 57 countries and continues to actively pursue global expansion.
Last year, during the company’s 30th anniversary celebration, Chairman Yoon Hong-keun unveiled a vision to establish 50,000 global stores by 2030. It has also been focusing expansion into Latin America, opening stores in countries such as Panama, Costa Rica, and Colombia.
