Jointly hosted by Jeollanam-do and the Organizing Committee, attended by over 100 local officials and receiving a great response - Signed MOUs with China-Korea Demonstration Zone and Jilin Provincial Tourism Association... Initiating efforts to attract 5,000 tourists - Participation from 33 countries and international organizations confirmed... Accelerating all-out marketing including cruises and charter flights
(Muan/Yeosu = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Jeollanam-do (China Office) and the Organizing Committee for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo (hereinafter the Organizing Committee) have launched full-scale local marketing efforts to attract tourists to China's Three Northeastern Provinces.
Jeollanam-do and the Organizing Committee announced that on the 25th, they jointly held the "2026 Yeosu World Island Expo Changchun Tourism Briefing" in Changchun, Jilin Province, China, and conducted promotional activities to introduce the Expo and the excellent tourism resources of Jeollanam-do and Yeosu to local government agencies and the travel industry. The event was attended by over 100 key local figures, including Zhang Yong, Deputy Secretary-General of the Changchun Municipal People's Government; Zhao Danhui, President of the Jilin Provincial Tourism Association; and Zhou Zheng, Deputy Secretary and Director of the Party Committee of the China-Korea (Changchun) International Cooperation Demonstration Zone, as well as representatives from the tourism industry in the three northeastern provinces, demonstrating keen interest.
The Organizing Committee garnered a strong positive response from local officials by beginning with the screening of a promotional video for the Island Expo, followed by explanations of Jeollanam-do's tourism resources and the Expo's core content, as well as presentations on customized tourism products and mutual cooperation strategies.
In particular, this briefing session drew attention as practical Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) for establishing local networks in China were signed in succession.
Jeollanam-do and the Organizing Committee signed MOUs with the "Management Committee of the China-Korea (Changchun) International Cooperation Demonstration Zone"—a national-level international cooperation platform promoting the opening of China's Northeast region to the outside world and Korea-China cooperation—and the "Jilin Provincial Tourism Association," respectively, thereby laying a solid foundation for cooperation to promote the Expo and attract group tourists. In addition, a business agreement was concluded between A&T, the official travel agency for the Island Expo, and Jilin Province Global International Travel Agency. The two companies agreed to promote the recruitment of 5,000 Chinese tourists through the operation of tourism packages linked to the Expo. As the travel agency previously sent around 100 Chinese tourists to Yeosu last April, expectations are high that this agreement will lead to tangible results in attracting visitors.
In addition to this briefing in Changchun, the Organizing Committee has been conducting comprehensive recruitment activities on a global scale.
Starting with participation in the World Tourism Fair (WTM), the world's largest international tourism exhibition held in London, UK, last November, the committee has been raising its global awareness through events such as the Korea-Japan Tourism Promotion Council in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, last December, and a tourism briefing in Los Angeles, USA, this March.
Domestic marketing is also active. Through an agreement with the Korean Association of Secondary School Principals, a promotional campaign targeting approximately 1,800 principals was conducted at the Yeosu Summer Professional Development Training site on the 25th. Efforts are also being concentrated on attracting group student visitors by linking the event with school excursions and field trips for elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide.
As a result of these multifaceted efforts, the participation of a total of 33 countries and international organizations has been confirmed, including 30 nations such as Italy, the United States, Cuba, Ecuador, Indonesia, and Tanzania, as well as three international organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.
The Organizing Committee is also devoting its full efforts to securing transportation infrastructure to enhance accessibility for overseas tourists. While attracting large-scale group tourists, primarily from China and Japan, through 12 international cruise ship arrivals during the Expo, the committee is also pursuing the operation of international charter flights at Yeosu Airport to major Asian countries such as Vietnam, China, and Mongolia. Cho Hyung-geun, Head of the Planning Division at the Organizing Committee, stated, “As the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo is the first international event to be held since the establishment of Gwangju Metropolitan City, South Jeolla Province, attracting overseas visitors is a top priority.” He added, “We are expanding cooperation with the education sector as well as domestic and international travel agencies, including the Asia-Pacific Travel Agency Association and the Korea Travel Agency Association.”
He continued, “We hope that this tourism briefing in Changchun, China, will serve as an opportunity for more Chinese tourists to visit Gwangju Metropolitan City and Yeosu to experience firsthand the true essence of South Coast tourism, where islands and the sea harmonize.”
